A Day with the Winners

We were burning tires on the South Luzon Esxpressway as early as five in the morning en route to Boy Lechon’s farm in Malvar, Batangas. The idea was to get there before sunrise to get enough photos of roosters doing their “wake-up calls.” farm owner, our host Mr. Benigno “Boy Lechon” de Roca was there early. Hot coffee and freshly cooked suman were promptly served.

BAKBAKAN 2009 DERBY STAKES P30M PRIZE PURSE

The 2009 Annual Bakbakan National 10-Stag Derby is back into its record-breaking way again as its host - the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders (NFGB) dangles a historic guaranteed cash prize of P30,000,000 – the biggest prize purse ever in Philippine cockfighting.

The champion’s prize is a whopping P15 million. All entries who will be able to score a 3 wins (3 points) in the elimination round will share in the “first-salvo blowout” of four million peso (P4,000,000) while those entries who have already scored the perfect 3 wins in the elims and continue to score another perfect 3 wins in the semi-final round, for an over-all score of 6 wins before entering the finals, will share in the “finalists prize” of two million-pesos(P2,000,000). Last year, only 15 entries were undefeated and have posted six points each going into the finals.

For “any 7 points” – P4 million; for “any 8 points” – P2.5 million; for “any 9 points” – P1.5 million; for the overall runner-up finisher, prize is P500,000, while the champion’s handler and champion’s gaffer prizes are P400,000 and P100,000, respectively. Entry fee is P15,000.

“Bakbakan is the Filipino breeders' derby and through the years we have made sure and have put in place a proven system that ensure fairness and equal winning chance for every participant”, stated Batac, Ilocos Norte Mayor Jess Nalupta who is NFGB’s Vice President for North Luzon.

“Wingband numbers and legitimacy of stags fielded are duly authenticated by double checking with our records and not just by the basis of the breeder’s screening receipt”, Freddie Yulo - one of NFGB’s founding director, proudly announced. "all derbies are computer-matched and supervised by our well trained working committees" he adds!

NFGB SET TO BREAK RECORD AGAIN WITH 2009 BAKBAKAN

With 2,210 farms visited across the country wherein a total of 202,708 cockerels were wingbanded, the National Federation of Gamefowl Breeders expresses confidence that the 2,000-entry target for this year’s Bakbakan 10-Stag national Derby will be easily realized with 2,210 entries expected to see action. A guaranteed cash prize of P30 million is at stake for the 2009 Bakbakan with the entry fee pegged at P15,000.

“That is just assuming that each farm will field one entry for a 100 percent turn-out” says NFGB President Ricoy Palmares, as he noted that in 2008, a total of 2,203 entries saw action out of 1,972 farms registered for an almost 120% turn-out.

“We are looking forward to a new record”, Palmares added.

Among the 29 member-associations under the NFGB, Panay Gamefowl Breeders Ass’n has the biggest number of farms registered at 210 and the most cockerels banded at 19,719. Based on farms which were submitted for banding in second position is the fast growing Batangas Breeders Club headed by NFGB Vice President for Luzon Fred Katigbak with 146 farms and 14,616 cockerels banded. Third is the just three-year old Rizal Gamefowl Breeders Ass’n with 144 farms and 13,473 birds marked.

The country’s first gamefowl breeders group – the Negros Gamefowl Breeders Association headed by former La Carlota City Mayor Juancho Aguirre is 4th with 132 farms, but 14,048 young stags banded, while the Al Garcia – led Gamefowl Breeders Association of Negros is 5th with 127 and 14,000.

The 2009 Bakbakan will be held from October 10 with several separate eliminations nationwide up to December 3 when undefeated entries take on each other for the crown in the finals set at Araneta Coliseum.
